Metabolic Detoxification

The Importance Of Detoxification

We live in an increasingly toxic environment. Many toxins, also known as persistent organic pollutants (POPs), are abundant in the environment today that did not exist 30 years ago. These new toxins include certain pesticides, herbicides and industrial chemicals. Every day, millions of molecules from different compounds enter our bodies through voluntary ingestion or involuntary exposure. These chemicals come from foods, beverages, medicines, food additives, personal care products and numerous other sources. While the human body has excellent built-in mechanisms to cleanse itself of these pollutants, it is unable to completely eliminate them. As a result, these toxins can and often do become trapped in the body’s organs and tissues, which over time can negatively impact health, vitality and overall wellness, and may contribute to the development of chronic illness. When the body’s ability to detoxify these compounds cannot keep up with the load, health starts to deteriorate. That is where a good detoxification program can really make a difference.

How Does Detoxification Work?

In the human body, the liver and kidneys function as filters for harmful substances. This natural filtration system needs to be properly supported to ensure that the body’s detoxification process is functioning effectively and that toxins are being properly eliminated. However, when the liver enzyme system gets overwhelmed, it reduces the liver’s capacity to properly detoxify.

This can lead to unwanted buildup of toxins in the body that can manifest in numerous ways such as fatigue, headaches, hormone imbalance, chemical sensitivities, allergies, digestive symptoms and neurological symptoms.

There are two phases of liver detoxification: Phase 1 and Phase 2. In Phase 1, the liver modifies fat soluble toxins to get ready for Phase 2, which turns them into water soluble compounds so they can be safely excreted by the body. Specific nutrients are required during each phase of detoxification. A proper detoxification program provides important amino acids, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients that feed and support the liver ‘s ability to conduct Phase 1 and 2 to break down toxins while also supporting the excretion of these toxins.

Potential Benefits of Detoxification:

  • Healthy energy and vitality
  • Proper weight management
  • Healthy skin and hair
  • Restful sleep
  • Clear thinking

I will often recommend detoxification for those who show symptoms of an overburdened liver/gallbladder system on a Metabolic Assessment Form. If you would like to know if this could be beneficial to your health, download the Metabolic Assessment Form here, and call our office to schedule a consultation.
